Twin-roots of words and their properties

چکیده
In this paper we generalize the notion of an ι-symmetric word, from an antimorphic involution, to an arbitrary involution ι as follows: a nonempty word w is said to be ι-symmetric if w = αβ = ι(βα) for some words α, β . We propose the notion of ιtwin-roots (x, y) of an ι-symmetric wordw. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the ι-twin-roots of an ι-symmetric word, and show that the left factor α and right factor β of any factorization of w as w = αβ = ι(βα), can be expressed in terms of the ι-twin-roots ofw. In addition, we show that for any involution ι, the catenation of the ι-twin-roots ofw equals the primitive root ofw. We also provide several characterizations of the ι-twin-rots of a word, for ι being a morphic or antimorphic involution. Crown Copyright© 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Listeners perceive prefixes differently: Evidence from a noise-rating task
When compared to suffixes, prefixes possess several distinctive but largely unexplained properties. This paper explores the idea that these properties might arise from a common source, namely discontinuous recognition of spoken prefixed words, in which listeners ‘skip’ to that portion of the speech stream which contains the root. If this occurs, listeners could potentially perceive prefixes ver...
متن کاملDescriptive Semantics of the Nominal Hapax Legomenon of the Word Menhaj and the Pathology of its Three Translations (Meybodi, Makarem Shirazi and Ansarian)
Understanding the Quran depends upon appreciating meanings of the single words and concepts that are interconnected and interrelated like a chain. Nominal hapax legomenon in the Quran is a word that occurs only once in the holy Quran. Hence, such words need semantic scrutiny since they are difficult to understand. Accordingly, understanding hapax legomenons calls for examining and identifying t...
متن کاملMaya Arad Locality Constraints on the Interpretation of Roots: the Case of Hebrew Denominal Verbs
This paper argues for a distinction between word formation from roots and word formation from existing words. Focusing on Hebrew, it is shown that roots – and only roots – may be assigned multiple interpretations in different environments. When the basis for the derivation is a word, this word forces its semantic and phonological properties on any element derived from it. To account for this di...
متن کاملEvidence for Early Morphological Decomposition in Visual Word Recognition
We employ a single-trial correlational MEG analysis technique to investigate early processing in the visual recognition of morphologically complex words. Three classes of affixed words were presented in a lexical decision task: free stems (e.g., taxable), bound roots (e.g., tolerable), and unique root words (e.g., vulnerable, the root of which does not appear elsewhere). Analysis was focused on...
